As a loyal INHABIT customer or even as just an online window shopper, you may have noticed that we have a bit of a thing for the number 8. We try to run our sales on the 8th day of the month. At most, we feature 8 products per page. We even lower our prices so that they can end in an 8. It’s a bit of an obsession, but there’s at least a good reason for it.
In Chinese culture, the number 8 is considered the luckiest of all numbers. A commonly held explanation for this superstition is that the Chinese word for “eight” (八, pronounced: bā) sounds just like the Chinese word for “prosper” (发财, pronounced: fā). There is also a visual resemblance between the numeral “8″and the Chinese character 喜, which means joy or happiness. The Chinese belief that the number 8 is lucky has permeated the nation’s culture so much so, that the opening ceremony of the olympic games in Beijing were purposely kicked off at 8:08 pm on 8/08/08.
As a company with Chinese cultural influence, headquarted in New York, INHABIT has brought this belief in the power of 8’s from the streets of Shanghai to Broadway. It is just our little way of sharing some Chinese culture with you, and reinforcing that lucky feeling you have when you get a brand new INHABIT sweater.
